It depends on a number of factors, primarily your home’s current exterior finish, your geographical location, and the quality of prep and application on the last paint job.

How Often Should Your Home be Painted?

Wood siding should be repainted every 3-7 years, or if staining is your preference, approximately every 4 years. Aluminum siding can go about 5 years between paint jobs, and stucco 5-6 years. The only upkeep for unpainted brick is cleaning, although you will need to paint the trim, of course. If you do choose to paint the brick itself, a good quality job will last 15-20 years.

Don’t try to save money by not painting your home when you notice peeling. This will make the prep work harder and therefor the next job will require more work and therefor more money. When you see peeling or even bare wood, it’s time to call your house painter.

What Affects the Durability of Exterior Paint?

Previous Paint Job — When you repaint your house again, has a lot to do with the quality of the previous paint job. Did the painters prepare the surfaces correctly? Were enough coats applied? A bad paint job could mean that your home would need repainting in 2 years.

Climate — Extreme Humidity, very hot temperatures, salty ocean air and long periods of direct sun contact will affect the durability of acrylic paint.

Maintenance — Keeping an eye on moisture around the exterior of your home is let. Look for rot, mold and any signs that the painted material is failing. Obviously this will affect the paint job.
